Potato Magic is an extract made from potatoes. The active ingredients are best found in potatoes that no longer exist in modern production or local gardens.
This potato is classified as a "heritage" variety because it was popular in post colonial days but fell out of usage in the 1800's because of the development of new disease resistant varieties. As a result, this variety along with many varieties of corn, wheat and other crops past into obscurity or went extinct all together. Many heritage variety plants and crops were associated with medicinal properties as were potatoes.
Before modern times, potatoes were said to have the ability to cure many skin ailments. A colonial wives tale said that to get rid of warts and moles you would rub them with a potato under the full moon. And from what we have found from working with this variety of potato - all of this is true. Even the part about the moon, because the chemicals in the potato are very sensitive to light and probably work if exposed to daylight. Not that they realized this, but saying put it on in moon light is probably just a way of saying "put it on in the dark".
Believe it or not, we first came across this potato during a hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail in the Appalachian Mountains in 1992. It looked like a bear had decided to make a meal of several. Shortly after this trip, we heard the potato wives tale for the first time and tried it with this discovered potato with excellent results.
